Join the Mourning Society

The Mourning Society is, first and foremost, a reenacting group that focuses on public events. We do have a few member activities and meetings throughout the year, but most of our work is centered around the planning and execution of the events you see here.

We are looking for members who are reenactors or are interested in getting started and are curious about the cultural history of the 19th Century related to mourning, death culture, spiritualism, funeral customs and other interesting topics. To get started, fill out our member application or contact us with any questions.

How the Mourning Society Works

There are no membership fees but there are minimum participation requirements and registration is necessary for each event. If you have not dressed in historical clothing for one of our events before, you will need clothing approval at least two weeks before the date of the event.

Members of the group are responsible for purchasing or making their own clothing and accessories. We can provide advice on where to look for appropriate items and patterns, but acquiring the things you need is up to you. The Mourning Society does not loan or sell historical clothing for use at our events.
